There is always so much pressure to know your elevator pitch! How about I just tell you about the experiences that have shaped who I am today, what I’m passionate about, and what gets my attention?
I have worked in higher education for 17+ years in a variety of functions: orientation, residence life, housing operations, conduct and assessment. I’ve worked at medium public institutions, small privates, and medium-sized private colleges. I’ve also consulted with housing technology firms, most recently RoomSync, incorporating a practitioner perspective for customer service and consulted for associations to develop courses for educators to create learning outcome-based training curriculum. I have consulted for colleges and universities, serving as a subject matter expert in curriculum design in professional and paraprofessional training, fostering exceptional leadership skills through value, communication, and emotional intelligence, and providing benchmark data as an external reviewer. I defended my dissertation at Northeastern University, focusing my studies on organizational leadership and my dissertation on the lived experiences of queer senior student affairs officers.
I've served as an adjunct faculty member, teaching Adult Development, Introduction to Communication, and an introductory course encouraging students to find their personal motivations in their educational journey (Personal Dimensions of Education). In addition to my role as an administrator, I also held a courtesy appointment as Assistant Professor of LGBT Studies at Hobart and William Smith, instructing one section of Introduction to LGBTQ Studies in addition to instructing the Personal Empowerment courses. In addition to my Doctor of Education degree, I have my bachelor’s degree in English and master’s in social sciences with a concentration in student affairs and diversity. I completed my master’s project researching how LGB individuals courted their partners and why they were comfortable using that particular forum.
Arguably, the best part of my work has been founding the Personal Empowerment Institute, designing a curriculum for Personal Empowerment, a course for students to develop self awareness and self management skills based on developing Emotional Intelligence, and helping them infuse the concepts with their peers and community. As a nationally certified Personal Empowerment Instructor and Master Trainer, I can not only create an engaging program or workshop designed to increase EQ, but also prepare a curriculum to help your team facilitate their own EQ workshops. I also provide one-on-one coaching, and empowerment classes and workshops.
And, the best part of life is being a partner of 13 years, and father to an almost 10 year old daughter, and dad to two (yes, 2…) golden retrievers! We reside in the Finger Lakes, stolen Haudenosaunee land, currently known as New York.
What some organizers and participants have to share:
"Brandon's light shines sooo bright and this is obvious to all those who come in contact with him. If you are lucky enough to work with Brandon, you will leave a much more self-aware and empowered individual. Highly recommended :)"
~Christy (Elmira, NY)
"Brandon is the personification of self-actualization. Reading his blogs and posts has allowed me to see things from other perspectives, challenge my own opinions, and broaden my horizons."
~ Dina (Long Island, NY)
